3 Places I Visit Whenever I Need Peace in Udaipur

A quiet evening in Udaipur, where familiar places can feel like a little escape.

There are days when I don't want to make plans.

I don't want to visit a new café, tick places off a sightseeing list, or do anything complicated. I simply want to step out, breathe a little, and spend some quiet time with myself.

Over the years, I have realised that in Udaipur, I don't need to travel far to find that feeling.

There are a few places I naturally return to whenever I need peace.

Sometimes I go alone. Sometimes I call a friend and go for a drive. Sometimes I simply sit near Lake Pichola in the evening. And on other days, I find myself standing inside a temple, listening to the bells and feeling a little lighter than before.

These are not necessarily the most famous places in Udaipur. They are simply my favourite places for finding peace.

So, if you are looking for a slow and peaceful evening in Udaipur, here are the three places I personally return to.

1. A Long Drive from Rani Road Towards Amberi & the Ahmedabad Highway

One of my favourite ways to clear my head is simply getting on the road and driving towards Amberi.

Best for: Solo drives, conversations with a friend, clearing your head and enjoying the road

One of my favourite ways to feel better is surprisingly simple—a long drive.

Whenever I feel like I need some space, I often start from Rani Road and drive towards the Amberi side and further towards the Ahmedabad Highway.

I don't always have a fixed destination.

That is actually the point.

Sometimes I go alone with my favourite music playing. Sometimes I take a friend along and we talk about everything and nothing. There is something about being on the road that makes ordinary conversations feel different.

The surroundings gradually change as you move away from the busy parts of the city. You get stretches where you can simply enjoy the road, the Aravalli landscape and the feeling of leaving the day's worries behind.

For me, this is less about reaching a particular place and more about the journey itself.

My usual drive route

Rani Road → Fateh Sagar side → Amberi → NH 48 / Ahmedabad Highway side

The Amberi area connects with the Udaipur bypass and NH 48, which continues towards Shamlaji, Himmatnagar and Ahmedabad.

You don't have to drive all the way towards Ahmedabad. I usually treat this as a flexible drive—go as far as I feel like going and then return.

Why I love this drive

There is no pressure to do anything.

No sightseeing checklist.

No fixed timetable.

Just music, the road, the changing landscape and a little time to myself.

If I am travelling alone, I enjoy the silence. If I am with a friend, the drive becomes a chance to talk without the distractions of everyday life.

My tip: Start around late afternoon if you want a pleasant drive, but avoid driving after dark on unfamiliar stretches. Keep your phone charged, carry water and use live navigation for the current road conditions and traffic.

2. Sitting at a Ghat Around Lake Pichola in the Evening

Sometimes, sitting quietly beside Lake Pichola is all I need to slow down.

Best for: Sunset, quiet thinking, people-watching and doing absolutely nothing

If there is one thing I can do in Udaipur without getting bored, it is sitting near Lake Pichola in the evening.

I don't necessarily need a boat ride or a rooftop restaurant.

Sometimes, all I want is a place near the water where I can sit quietly and watch the evening unfold.

Lake Pichola is surrounded by historic buildings, ghats and the old city, with the City Palace standing along its eastern bank. The lake is especially beautiful around sunset when the changing light reflects across the water.

I like finding a quieter spot at one of the ghats, sitting for a while and simply watching what is happening around me.

People walking through the old lanes.

Someone sitting quietly by the water.

Boats moving across the lake.

The sounds of the city slowly becoming softer as evening arrives.

And then there is that beautiful moment when the lights begin appearing around the lake.

My simple Lake Pichola evening route

Old City → Jagdish Chowk → Gangaur Ghat / nearby Lake Pichola ghats → sit by the lake → sunset → slow walk through the Old City

Gangaur Ghat is particularly convenient because it is very close to Jagdish Temple and the Old City.

I don't always stay at the same ghat. Sometimes I simply walk around and choose whichever place feels peaceful that day.

Why this place feels different

Maybe it is the water.

Maybe it is the old architecture around the lake.

Or maybe it is because sitting beside Lake Pichola gives you permission to slow down.

There is something very comforting about not having to do anything.

You can sit there for twenty minutes or an hour.

No plan. No rush.

Just the lake, the evening sky and your thoughts.

My tip: Evening is my favourite time, especially around sunset. If you are visiting alone, choose a reasonably active and well-lit ghat and keep your belongings with you. For a quieter experience, go on a weekday rather than a busy weekend evening.

3. Going to Mahakaleshwar Temple or Jagdish Temple

Best for: When you need spiritual peace rather than just a change of scenery

Sometimes a drive doesn't help.

Sometimes sitting beside the lake isn't enough either.

On those days, I prefer going to a temple.

Two places I naturally think of are Mahakaleshwar Temple and Jagdish Temple.

Both are very different experiences, but both give me the feeling of stepping away from everyday noise for a while.

Mahakaleshwar Temple

A familiar place I return to when I need a little spiritual peace.

Mahakaleshwar Temple is located on Rani Road near Fateh Sagar and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is known as an important spiritual place in Udaipur and has a peaceful atmosphere.

For me, visiting Mahakal is not about sightseeing.

I go there when I want to sit quietly, pray and spend some time with myself.

The atmosphere around the temple feels especially comforting in the evening.

The bells, the prayers and the familiar surroundings have a way of making you slow down.

Sometimes I go with a specific thought in my mind.

Sometimes I don't.

I simply go.

My route to Mahakaleshwar

Rani Road → Mahakaleshwar Temple → spend some quiet time → Fateh Sagar side

Since the temple is on Rani Road near Fateh Sagar, it can also be combined naturally with a peaceful drive around the lake.

Jagdish Temple

Jagdish Temple is one of those places where the busy Old City seems to slow down for a while.

The other place I often choose is Jagdish Temple in the heart of Udaipur's Old City.

Built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh I, Jagdish Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is one of Udaipur's most important historic temples. Its beautifully carved architecture is impressive, but for me, the peaceful feeling inside the temple is what makes me return.

I like going there when I am already around the Old City.

You walk through the busy lanes, reach Jagdish Chowk and then climb the temple steps.

Once you enter, the atmosphere changes.

The sounds of the street remain outside, while inside there is the rhythm of prayers, bells and devotion.

If I have time, I sometimes combine my visit to Jagdish Temple with a walk towards Lake Pichola and one of the nearby ghats.

My peaceful Old City route

Jagdish Temple → walk towards Gangaur Ghat → sit near Lake Pichola → sunset → slow walk back through the Old City

Jagdish Temple and Gangaur Ghat are very close to each other, making this an easy walking combination.

If You Have Only One Evening

If you are in Udaipur for just one evening and don't want a hectic sightseeing plan, I would personally choose this:

Option 1: Drive & Lake

4:00 PM – Start from Rani Road

Drive towards Amberi / NH 48 side

Return towards Udaipur

6:00–6:30 PM – Reach Lake Pichola

Sit at a ghat and watch the sunset

Evening walk through the Old City

This is the plan I would choose when I want to clear my head without doing too much.

Option 2: Temple & Lake

4:30 PM – Visit Mahakaleshwar Temple

Spend some quiet time there

Drive towards the Old City

Visit Jagdish Temple

Walk towards Gangaur Ghat

Sit beside Lake Pichola around sunset

This route gives you a little bit of everything—a temple, an old-city walk, the lake and a peaceful evening.

Why These Three Places Are Special to Me

What makes these places special is not that they are hidden.

They are actually part of Udaipur that many people already know.

What makes them special to me is the way I experience them.

The Rani Road drive gives me movement when I feel stuck.

Lake Pichola gives me stillness when my mind feels too busy.

And the temples give me a sense of calm when I need something deeper than just a change of scenery.

I think that is what I love most about Udaipur.

You don't always need to plan a weekend getaway to feel refreshed.

Sometimes, a familiar road is enough.

Sometimes, twenty minutes beside the lake is enough.

And sometimes, all you need is to stand quietly in front of a temple and take a deep breath.

These are my three places in Udaipur whenever I need peace.

What are yours?

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the best peaceful place in Udaipur for a solo evening?

For me, sitting quietly at a Lake Pichola ghat is one of the simplest options. If you prefer a more spiritual experience, Mahakaleshwar Temple or Jagdish Temple can be a better choice.

2. Is Rani Road good for a peaceful drive?

Yes. Rani Road is one of my favourite starting points for a relaxed drive, especially towards the Amberi/NH 48 side. The exact traffic and road conditions can change, so it is best to check live navigation before leaving.

3. Which Lake Pichola ghat is good for an evening visit?

Gangaur Ghat is a convenient choice because it is close to Jagdish Temple and the Old City. However, I personally don't always choose the same ghat—I prefer finding a quieter spot depending on the day.

4. Can I visit Jagdish Temple and Lake Pichola together?

Absolutely. Jagdish Temple and Gangaur Ghat are very close, so they make a natural combination for an evening walk.

5. What is the best time to visit Lake Pichola for peace?

I personally prefer late afternoon and sunset. If you want a quieter experience, a weekday evening is generally better than a busy weekend.

Final Note

This is not a list of Udaipur's “must-visit” tourist attractions.

It is my personal list.

These are the places I return to when I need to breathe, think, pray, talk, drive or simply do nothing for a while.

And perhaps that is what makes a place truly special—not how many people visit it, but how it makes you feel when you are there.
