Nirmal “Nims” Purja: The Fearless Mountaineer Who Redefined the Impossible

August 04, 2026

Every generation has a few individuals who redefine what humans believe is possible. Nirmal "Nims" Purja was one of them. His life was not just about climbing mountains—it was about breaking limits, challenging expectations and proving that determination can overcome even the toughest obstacles.

Through his incredible achievements, Nims became an inspiration for mountaineers, adventurers and young dreamers across the world. His journey reminds us that success is not measured only by reaching the top, but by the courage to keep moving forward when others think it cannot be done.

Who Was Nirmal "Nims" Purja?

Nirmal "Nims" Purja, popularly known as Nimsdai, was born on 25 July 1983 in Nepal. Before becoming one of the world's most respected mountaineers, he served in the Brigade of Gurkhas and later in the elite Special Boat Service (SBS). His military background shaped the discipline, resilience and leadership that later helped him achieve what many believed was impossible.

Project Possible – A Record That Shocked the World

In 2019, Nims launched an ambitious mission called Project Possible. His goal was simple to describe but incredibly difficult to achieve—climb all 14 mountains higher than 8,000 metres in less than seven months.

At that time, the existing record had taken nearly eight years.

Nims completed the challenge in just 6 months and 6 days, making history and proving that many limits exist only in our minds.

The fourteen peaks included Mount Everest, K2, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Annapurna, Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II and Shishapangma.

His achievement brought global recognition not only to himself but also to the incredible skills of Nepali climbers, whose contributions had often gone unnoticed.

More importantly, Project Possible challenged the long-held belief that climbing all 14 eight-thousanders had to take many years. It encouraged people around the world to believe that determination, preparation and teamwork can redefine what is possible.

More Than a Record Holder

Nims Purja was admired not only for breaking records but also for helping others in the mountains. During several expeditions, he took part in difficult rescue missions, putting humanity before personal achievement.

In 2021, he became part of the historic all-Nepali team that completed the first successful winter ascent of K2, one of the world's most dangerous mountains.

His inspiring journey reached millions through the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, introducing people across the world to his remarkable story.

A Mindset That Inspired Millions

One of Nims Purja's most memorable quotes is:

"Giving up is not in the blood, Sir."

These simple words reflect his entire philosophy. Every difficult climb, every dangerous expedition and every challenge he accepted carried the same message—never stop believing in yourself.

Why I Chose to Share His Story

As an educator, I believe that students learn not only from textbooks but also from real-life stories.

Today, I had the opportunity to speak about Nirmal Purja during our school session. I also showed my students videos of his mountaineering journey on the projector so they could see the challenges he faced and the determination that helped him overcome them.

Watching their expressions was the best part of the session. Many students were surprised to learn that someone could climb all fourteen of the world's highest mountains in such a short time. Some even asked how a person develops that level of courage and mental strength.

Moments like these remind me that education is about inspiring young minds to dream bigger and believe in themselves.

Lessons We Can Learn From Nims Purja

Nims Purja's life teaches us lessons that go far beyond mountaineering.

  • Dream bigger than your fears.

  • Discipline is more powerful than talent.

  • Great achievements are never made alone—teamwork matters.

  • Challenges help us grow stronger.

  • Never let temporary failures decide your future.

  • Believe in yourself, even when others doubt you.

These lessons are valuable not only for students but for anyone working towards a meaningful goal.

A Legacy That Will Always Inspire

Today, whenever I think about determination, Nims Purja is one of the first names that comes to my mind. Sharing his story with my students was my way of showing them that greatness is not reserved for a few extraordinary people—it begins with ordinary individuals who refuse to give up.

His journey will continue to inspire educators, students, travellers and dreamers for generations to come.

Giving up is not in the blood, Sir.
